Caramac bars are made from condensed milk, butter, various flavourings and sugar.

Despite often sharing the shelves with chocolate bars, and coming in the form of one, they do not contain any cocoa.

Caramac was known for its distinct branding and wrapper which was later replaced by a red and gold theme.

The popular bar is often described as having a unique butterscotch-like flavour.

Caramac was created by Mackintosh and was launched in 1959 – making it a mainstay in the confectionery world in the UK.

The name is a combination of ‘Caramel’ and ‘Mackintosh’ and was determined through a competition held by the management team at Mackintosh’s for their workers at the factory in Norwich.

In 2005, Nestle paired Caramac with Kit Kat snack to make a limited edition Caramac Kit Kat bar.

The collaboration was a big hit and was brought back by popular demand in 2007.

Nestle also produced Caramac buttons in 2015.

Why did Nestle discontinue the Caramac chocolate bar?

The sales of the bar have “steadily declined” over the past few years, according to Nestle, which bought the brand as part of a takeover in 1998.

The company has now decided to pull the product altogether.

A Nestle spokesperson told The Sun: “We are very sorry to disappoint fans of Caramac.

“There has been a steady decline in its sales over the past few years and we had to make the difficult decision to discontinue it.

“We know fans will be disappointed to see it go, but this change will enable us to focus on our best-performing brands, as well as develop exciting new innovations to delight our consumers’ tastebuds.”

Is the Caramac chocolate bar still available?

Nestle started withdrawing Caramac single bars from the beginning of September.

Multipacks of Caramac will be available until the end of this year (2023).
