Just Stop Oil target painting at National Gallery
Mary Richardson #MaryRichardson
STORY: The painting was originally damaged by the suffragette Mary Richardson, apparently in protest at the arrest of Emmeline Pankhurst, one of the leaders of the group campaigning for the right of women to vote in elections.
The two protesterson Monday, named as 20-year-old Harrison Donnelly and 22-year-old Hanan by the group, shouted at London’s National Gallery about the need to “just stop oil,” with Donnelly saying “millions will die due to new oil and gas licenses.”
In July the government said more than 100 new oil and gas licences in the North Sea would be granted, and the new legislation on future rounds will be set out on Tuesday (November 7) when King Charles outlines the government’s legislative agenda at the start of a new parliamentary session.
