Cardinals to start rookie Tune over Dobbs if Murray can’t go vs. Browns

The Arizona Cardinals are making another change at quarterback.

Fifth-round rookie Clayton Tune will be under center Sunday against the Cleveland Browns instead of Joshua Dobbs if Kyler Murray is still unavailable, head coach Jonathan Gannon announced Monday, according to ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss.

Murray hasn’t played in 2023, as he began this season recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in Week 14 last year. The former No. 1 pick returned to practice last week but wasn’t available to play in Sunday’s 31-24 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. He could return versus Cleveland.

“We’re going to keep ramping up Kyler and see how he progresses through the week,” Gannon said Monday, according to Bo Brack of PHNX Cardinals.

Murray is more likely to be back in Week 10 against the Atlanta Falcons, sources told NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Dobbs started this season’s first eight games for the Cardinals, who are off to a 1-7 start. The 28-year-old journeyman, whom Arizona acquired in August, has completed 62.8% of his passes for 1,569 yards and eight touchdowns against five interceptions this year. He’s added 258 yards and three scores on the ground.

Gannon said after the Ravens game that Dobbs would remain the starter until Murray’s return. Dobbs accounted for three touchdowns while tossing two interceptions versus Baltimore.

Tune joined the Cardinals in April after a standout career at Houston. The 24-year-old has attempted just one pass this season.
