James Cummings remarked Tom Kitten would eat up the 2500 metres of the Victoria Derby and he would give consideration to backing him up next Saturday after his demonstrative three and three-quarters length win in the Group 1 Spring Champions Stakes (2000m, 3yo) at Randwick.

Although Tom Kitten is by sprinter Harry Angel, Cummings believes he could run out a strong 2500 metres.

“It’s worth thinking about. He’s a very interesting horse, he’s from a quick family, but he’s inbred to Machiavellian the sire of Street Cry,” Cummings said.

“The horse has a classic style about him, he looks like he would eat up 2500m and the VRC Derby is a time-honoured race, so it’s certainly worth thinking about.”

“But whatever we do, it will revolve around just how well Tom Kitten is and that’s the bottom line.”

Cummings predicted a race such as the Cox Plate in a year’s time would be ideal for Tom Kitten.

After an exasperating spring campaign James Cummings was pleased that Tom Kitten could demonstrate his ability without having to suffer any bad luck when he strolled in with the Spring Champion Stakes.

“The horse’s misfortunes have been immeasurable these past three starts. It’s just fantastic that he was able to get into the clear when he found himself in the best race of the prep and he was able to show just how good he is,” Cummings said.

It gave James Cummings his first win in the Spring Champions Stakes a racve his grandfather Bart won on four occasions and his father Anthony on two occasions.

Tom Kitten’s jockey Adam Hyeronimus said the horse was unbelievable.

“He’s a gentle giant, but he’s got so much ability. I don’t think they’ve got to the bottom of him, I think he’ll be better next preparation,” he said.
