(MENAFN) During a meeting of the Justice and Development (AK) Party’s parliamentary group in Ankara, the Turkish President called for an immediate cease-fire in the Palestine-Israel conflict, urging all involved parties to de-escalate hostilities.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan revealed that he had intended to visit Israel before the conflict erupted on October 7 but ultimately canceled those plans. He emphasized that Turkey does not harbor issues with the Israeli state but will never condone any acts of atrocity committed by it.

Erdogan pointed out that a significant portion of the casualties in Israeli attacks on Gaza consists of children, indicating a deliberate and brutal approach amounting to crimes against humanity.

He said that when those who stood up for the world in Russia’s war on Ukraine are silent about the massacre in Gaza, this is the “most concrete expression of hypocrisy.”

He claimed that the US would lose because it does not appear to want the globe to be governed properly, accusing other nations of “adding fuel to the fire” by backing Israel.

Turkey expressed profound dismay at the United Nations’ perceived ineffectiveness, where it feels that the organization has become powerless and isn’t taken seriously. Erdogan added that the UN seemed to overlook the brutal killing of children.

Erdogan reiterated Turkey’s objections to the UN Security Council’s inequitable structure, highlighting a recent instance where a Middle East cease-fire resolution was blocked by one of the council’s five permanent members. This situation reaffirmed Turkey’s longstanding concerns about the council’s structure.

Erdogan emphasized his well-known slogan for UN reform, stating, “The world is bigger than five,” highlighting the issue of the UN Security Council’s composition, which includes five permanent members with veto power and is seen as unrepresentative of the world’s diversity and interests.
