Former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows will testify against Donald Trump in exchange for immunity in special counsel Jack Smith’s probe of the ex-president’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election, according to a new report.
Meadows spoke with Smith’s investigators multiple times this year, including once under oath in front of a federal grand jury, after he was granted immunity in exchange for his testimony, ABC News reported.
In those discussions, Meadows said he repeatedly told Trump his accusations of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election were baseless.
“Obviously we didn’t win,” a source quoted Meadows as saying, according to ABC News.
This booking photo provided by the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office shows Mark Meadows on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2023, in Atlanta, after he surrendered and was booked.
Meadows’ statements to investigators appear to contradict a book he wrote — “The Chief’s Chief” — that described the election as “stolen” and “rigged” with an assist from “allies in the liberal media” who dismissed “actual evidence of fraud, right there in plain sight for anyone to access and analyze.”
Meadows reportedly told investigators he had not seen any evidence of voter fraud. He also told them he never heard Trump say he lost.
While Meadows hasn’t been charged in Smith’s federal case, he — along with Trump and several others — is facing charges in Georgia related to the alleged efforts to overturn the election.
Earlier Tuesday, former campaign lawyer Jenna Ellis pleaded guilty and flipped on the ex-president in the Georgia election conspiracy case. Trump has denied all the allegations.
