Billy Ray Turner’s appeal denied in Lorenzen Wright murder, court records show

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – An appeal filed by the man convicted in the murder of former Memphis basketball star Lorenzen Wright has been denied, according to court documents.

The appeal, filed by Billy Ray Turner’s attorneys earlier this month, claims that Shelby County wasn’t the proper venue for the trial and that there were errors made in the trial process.

However, the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeal decided to uphold the conviction, saying that the evidence was sufficient and they couldn’t find any errors in the trial process “beyond a reasonable doubt,” court documents say.

In July 2022, Turner was sentenced to a pair of 25-year sentences for conspiracy and attempted murder to the life sentence he’d already gotten for the murder of Wright, records show.
