Marco Island Fire: No injuries after explosion at Monterrey Condominiums

A Monday morning explosion at the lobby of a condominium complex in Marco Island prompted first responders’ response, with investigators blaming it on an electrical issue.

Marco Island Fire Rescue and Marco Island Police responded to the scene at Monterrey Condominiums, 980 Cape Marco Dr., around 3 a.m. Monday.

At 2:59 a.m. Monday, the city said, the fire department was notified of fire alarms going off in the building, and three minutes later, Marco Island Police reported significant damage and smoke in the lobby area.

City officials said an unknown electrical malfunction in the building’s main electrical system resulted in an explosion, causing damage to the lobby and elevators.

No one was injured.

Authorities said the building, which has been evacuated, suffered significant damage to the lobby area.

“Pretty much all of the windows were blown out of the lobby,” City Manager Mike McNees told City Council Monday night at its regular meeting.

They said about 55 residents were present when the incident happened. By late afternoon, all residents had found temporary accommodations, Marco Island Fire Chief Chris Byrne told council members.

Both state and city fire marshals inspected the building, along with Lee County Electric Cooperative. The fire marshals determined there were electrical issues that don’t comply with inspection requirements.

“That building has now been officially red tagged,” McNees said during the council meeting.

Because of the damage and electrical issues that don’t meet code, the residents are expected to be displaced for “at least a couple of weeks,” McNees said. Officials don’t suspect foul play.
