Distraught punters say ‘you’ve got to be kidding me’ as £115,000 goes up in flames on horse who couldn’t lose

DISTRAUGHT punters were stung to the tune of £115,000 after seeing an unbeatable horse get pipped by a 999-1 in-running winner.

The jumps season opener was full of drama and saw a horror beat for bettors at Chepstow.

Aye Right – who had a bit over £111,000 matched on him before the off on the Betfair Exchange – looked to have the opening 2m7f veterans chase in the bag as he cruised eight lengths clear approaching the last.

He pinged it under Ryan Mania and hit the basement price of 1.01 on the Betfair Exchange.

Some £3,000 was matched on the horse in-running, as punters thought, quite rightly, that victory was in the bag.

But the unthinkable happened as the horse ran out of gas on the run to the line.

Good Boy Bobby, who hit the maximum price of 1000 (999-1) kept plugging on and found fresh legs in the final few yards.

The 10-year-old got better and better as the post got closer while Aye Right dawdled, ultimately throwing away victory in the most dramatic of circumstances.

Around £10 was matched at the max price, meaning approximately £10,000 went to punters who lucked out in-running.

For nearly everyone else it was a horror show – and hopefully not a sign of things to come for the season ahead.

One numb punter said: “How has Aye Right lost that? I cannot believe it.”

Another comment read: “Oh no!! Aye Right what happened there?! How’s he been beaten?!”

One bettor posted: “National Hunt is officially back! Aye Right manages to throw away a ten-length lead at the last to get chinned.

“You can’t not love it even if your money was on Aye Right.”

While another said simply: “What have I just seen?”
