Tourney qualifiers and undefeated teams: Everything to know about Norwich-area H.S. sports

Week 5 of the fall season featured a number of winning performances.

The Ellis Tech boys soccer team rolled to impressive wins over Wheeler, Plainfield, and Grasso Tech to improve to 7-1-1.

The Norwich Tech boys soccer team remained unbeaten at 7-0-1 with a win over Windham Tech and a draw against Plainfield.

The Norwich Free Academy girls soccer team qualified for the CIAC state tournament with wins over Ledyard and Ellinfgton, and a draw against fifth-ranked Waterford.

And the Griswold girls volleyball team took two of three matches to improve to 6-5.

Here are the highlights and top performances from Week 5:

Boys soccer

Louis Hawkins scored two goals, John Lopez had a goal and two assists, and Jaden Perkins added one goal to lift Norwich Free Academy past Fitch, 4-1.

Roman McElwee scored a one timer off a beautiful cross from Michael George at the 65th minute to lift unbeaten Norwich Tech (7-0-1) to a 1-0 victory over Windham Tech.

Lukas Weitknecht scored his first career goal, off an assist from Manoli Toromanidis, and Michael George had an unassisted goal to lift Norwich Tech to a 2-2 draw against Plainfield.

Jake Taylor scored both goals and Gwilym Cook had two assists for the Panthers. Cody Cramer scored the game-winning goal and Brody Rybacki finished with 11 saves as Ellis Tech (7-1-1) edged Wheeler, 1-0. Joao Vierra had the assist on Cramer’s winning goal.

Rybacki also made three saves in the Golden Eagles’ 3-0 win over Grasso Tech.

Hunter Giovanni, Trevor Lamothe, and Cameron Fulone had one goal apiece for Ellis Tech.

Cody Cramer notched a hat trick and Hunter Giovanni netted two goals to lift Ellis Tech over Plainfield, 5-2. Jake Taylor and Gavin Larose had one goal apiece for the Panthers.

Christian Tremblay had a goal, off an assist from John Fitzgibbons, but Killingly fell to Ledyard, 3-1. Trent Pichie made 15 saves for Killingly.

Girls soccer

Chloe Green and Jordan Fabry netted on goal apiece and Ava Boenig made nine saves as Norwich Free Academy edged Ledyard, 2-1. Hayleigh Young had an assist for the Wildcats (6-2-2).

Chloe Green had an unassisted goal in the first half but Waterford’s Adyson Wiseman tied it with 25 seconds left in regulation and the Wildcats and Lancers finished with a 1-1 double-overtime draw. Boenig finished with 11 saves for NFA.

Hayleigh Young notched a hat trick and Jordan Fabry had a goal and two assists to lead Norwich Free Academy to a 6-1 win over Ellington. Brooke Bolles (one assist) and Dylan Phelps each had one goal, while Alex Tabilas added two assists for the Wildcats.

Illyanna Malarkey scored two goals, and Molly Crabtree and Laura Farquhar each had one goal to lift Killingly past St. Bernard, 4-1. Erika Horne made four saves for Killingly (6-2).

Gillian Brix scored with five minutes left in regulation to lift Plainfield to a 3-2 victory over Wheeler. Morgan Yonush and Keriana Heredia had first-half goals for the Panthers (4-4-1).

Tori Iozzi scored four goals and Lily Goyette had a goal and one assist as Ellis Tech/Putnam topped Grasso Tech, 5-1. Iozzi had two goals in the Golden Eagles’ 2-2 tie against Windham Tech.

Girls volleyball

Ruby Logan collected 25 digs and five aces and Abby Matheson had 22 digs and eight kills as Griswold swept Lyman Memorial, 25-19, 25-11, and 25-16. Kierra Neilson had seven kills and three blocks and Emma Brayman had four kills and one block for the Wolverines.

Matheson had 22 digs and 15 kills and Logan had 20 digs but Griswold fell to Coventry, 16-25, 25-23, 25-22, and 27-25. Abby Matheson collected 24 digs and 13 kills and Kierra Neilson had nine kills and eight blocks to lead Griswold past Fitch, 25-21, 25-21, 22-25, and 25-23. Ruby Logan had 37 digs and Olivia Gasparino had eight kills and three blocks for the Wolverines.

Stella Hogan had 16 digs and six kills, Evelina Klyukin had nine kills and nine digs, and Faustine Canales Arrieta had eight assists for Norwich Free Academy in a 25-18, 25-10, and 25-21 loss against Coventry.

Savannah Guernsey collected 10 digs, three assists, and two kills, Klyukin had six kills, and Canales Arrieta had seven assists and seven digs but the Wildcats fell to Waterford, 25-13, 25-16, and 25-17.

Shanaya Brown had nine kills, Chloe Yip had 17 digs, five aces, and four assists, and Shyah Baker dished out 14 assists but Killingly fell to NFA, 25-20, 25-20, and 25-15.

Baker had 25 assists and Addison Montville had four kills in Killingly’s 29-27, 25-14, and 25-23 sweep over New London.

Sierra Madden collected 10 service points, nine kills and nine digs, Aubrie Howard had 13 service points and six kills, and Maddie Nordstrom had 15 service points with seven aces to lead Plainfield past Wheeler, 25-15, 25-16 19-25, and 25-18.

Abby Ulrich had 13 kills, Autumn Hanks had 10 assists, and Olivia Luurtsema had seven aces and five assists for Norwich Tech in a 20-25, 10-25, 25-20, 25-21, and 15-10 loss against Windham Tech.

Victoria Tirado had six kills and five digs,  Rose Johnny had five digs and five assists, Abby Ulrich had six aces and four as Norwich Tech (5-6, 5-2 CTC East) topped Grasso Tech, 25-23, 21-25, 25-14, and 25-18.

Field hockey

Norwich Free Academy fell to Waterford, 3-1. Alice Rourke had a goal for the Wildcats.

Boys cross country

Norwich Free Academy’s Patrick Croughwell placed first overall in a meet against East Lyme and Bacon Academy. Croughwell’s winning time was 17:09.1. The Wildcats also got Top 10 finishes from Jesse Croteau (sixth, 18:00.71) and Robinson Meuse (eighth, 18:37.9). NFA topped Bacon Academy, 15-48, but fell to East Lyme, 21-38.
