At least 198 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza after Israeli warplanes launched strikes in response to an incursion into Israel by Palestinian fighters, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.
Israeli forces are still battling Palestinian militants inside Israel and also launching attacks in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier on Saturday that the country is in a state of war.
The single-day death toll in Gaza on Saturday already exceeds the total number of civilians killed during an eight-day Israeli military offensive in Gaza in 2012, when around 100 civilians were killed, according to the U.N. and Palestinian human rights groups.
