RTE panel compare Andre Onana to notorious Man United flop after latest error

Former Ireland stars Kevin Doyle and Shay Given have not been impressed with the recent output of Andre Onana at Manchester United.

The Cameroon international was at fault again on Tuesday night as Man United blew their lead twice in the 3-2 defeat to Galatasaray.

His poor pass out from the back late in the second half caused chaos among the Red Devils’ backline, ultimately resulting in Casemiro getting himself sent off after attempting a poor recovery challenge.

It’s not been the first mistake from the summer signing this season; he was previously at fault for one of Bayern Munich’s goals in Man United’s last Champions League outing.

Over in the RTE studio, Doyle compared Onana to the situation of Massimo Taibi – infamously known by some as the ‘Blind Venetian’.

Signed by the then-European champions in the summer of 1999, the Italian made just a handful of appearances for the club before being binned off by Alex Ferguson.

‘You remember when Alex Ferguson signed Massimo Taibi, I don’t want to be comparing him to that,’ the former Ireland striker said on RTE.

‘But they spent a lot of money comparatively at the time for him, but Ferguson just pulled the plug after a couple of games.

‘That was it. That was the end of it. And if he keeps that up. That’s two or three mistakes. He needs to sort himself out and soon.’

Ex-goalkeeper Given also stated that Onana had been putting his team under needless ‘pressure’.

‘I spoke highly about him, about how good he is with the ball at his feet, but that’s a horrendous pass,’ Given continued. ‘There’s no getting away from that. He’s put his team under pressure.

‘You spent 50 million on him from Inter. He looked nervy throughout the game, a cross came in that he didn’t deal with well. He parried it out and got away with it.’
