After telling House Republicans in their morning meeting that he planned to hold the speaker challenge vote today, McCarthy sounded wistful notes to reporters about legislation he pushed over the objections of conservative dissidents who now seek his head.

“At the end of the day, keeping government open and paying our troops was the right decision. I stand by that decision. And then the day if I have to lose my job over, so be it.”
