Firefighters Rescue Driver Trapped In Semi-Truck That Rolled Over On Route 31 In Algonquin

Authorities say a driver was seriously injured and trapped after he lost control of his semi-truck tractor-trailer and rolled it over at a high speed on Route 31 in Algonquin.

The Algonquin Police Department and Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District responded around 10:12 p.m. Friday to Route 31 south of Algonquin Road for a rollover crash.

Algonquin Deputy Police Chief Ryan Markham said a 2014 Peterbilt semi-truck pulling a trailer was traveling southbound approaching South Main Street.

The driver of the semi-truck lost control as he entered the curve.

The truck and trailer both rolled over onto the passenger side and struck a utility pole, Markham said.

Wires from the pole came down and there was a loss of power to a portion of downtown Algonquin.

Firefighters rescued the driver from the vehicle in just over 25 minutes.

The semi-driver told officers that he had been cut off by another vehicle, resulting in him losing control as he attempted to avoid a crash, Markham said.

A witness told officers that the semi-truck failed to reduce its speed as it entered the curve.

The witness estimated the truck was traveling at approximately 45-50 mph and did not brake, which caused the truck to travel off the roadway into the ditch and roll onto its side, Markham said.

The driver was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Huntley Hospital with suspected major injuries, Markham added.

The driver was issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
