  • The United States have declined to comment on reports Patrick Cantlay is not wearing a cap in protest at players not being paid to play in the Ryder Cup – other than to point out that he also did not do so at the last tournament.

According to Sky Sports, the Californian is also sitting in a separate area of the visitors’ locker room with close friend Xander Schauffele amid a split in the camp, and refused to appear at the gala dinner last week.

Cantlay is the only player on the course not to be wearing a cap under blue skies and searing sunshine.

The detail adds to what has been a disastrous start for the Americans, who trailed 9.5–2.5 after the Saturday morning foursomes.

A US team spokesperson said simply: ‘He didn’t wear a cap at Whistling Straits.’

Patrick Cantlay hasn’t been wearing a Team USA cap amid reports of a split within the camp, according to Sky Sports reports

Cantlay and Schauffele lost their foursome match against Jon Rahm and Tyrell Hatton 2&1 as Europe opened up a commanding lead on Saturday morning, moving within five points of winning the Ryder Cup.

Sky reported that Cantlay’s behaviour caused a rift within Zach Johnson’s USA team room at the Marco Simone Golf Club.

Cantlay, 31, believes players should be paid to participate in the Ryder Cup, according to the reports, and refused to wear the team cap to demonstrate his frustration.

He did wear a cap during last year’s Presidents Cup, a PGA Tour event where players are paid.

Sky said Cantlay and Schauffele are sitting in a separate area of the US team dressing room.

Cantlay was mocked as he hit his first tee shot in Saturday afternoon’s fourball match. European fans were heard chanting: ‘Cantlay, where’s your cap? Cantlay Cantlay where’s your cap?’

That was followed by a shout of ‘where’s your cap?’ as his ball was in the air.

Before this weekend’s event, it was widely reported the pair refused to allow Netflix cameras access to the team room and they both missed Team USA’s pre-event scouting mission to Rome earlier this month.

Cantlay didn’t wear a cap when the Americans defeated Europe in 2021 at Whistling Straits

It came as Europe took several large strides towards winning the event in the Saturday morning foursomes.

Brooks Koepka and Scottie Scheffler were humiliated on Saturday morning as they suffered the worst beating in Ryder Cup history.

Scheffler was later seen in tears after he and fellow world No 1 Koepka went down nine and seven to the young Scandinavian pairing of Viktor Hovland and debutant Ludvig Aberg.

It was the precursor to another strong showing for Team Europe, who went into lunch leading 9.5-2.5, just five points away from outright victory.
