PORTSMOUTH – Tyrece Gibbs, who played his college basketball at the University of New Hampshire, has been named the head coach for the Portsmouth High School boys basketball team for the upcoming season.

“We’re very excited to have Coach Gibbs join the Clipper boys basketball program this season,” Portsmouth athletic director Tom Kozikowski said. “He brings a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience to make a very smooth transition to our student-athletes from Coach John Mulvey’s absence this season. Definitely looking forward to working with him and watching his impact on our young men’s development on and off the court. It should be a fun year.”

Gibbs called Portsmouth as an “amazing opportunity that presented itself at the right time.”

“Everything just aligned perfectly for me to land here,” Gibbs said. “After looking into this year’s team and seeing our returners along with the new faces, we should be in good shape heading into the season. That was part of my decision as well, no one raises their hand to coach a bad team so I saw what I had and jumped at the chance to lead this group. Again, I’m very excited and looking forward to a good year.”

Gibbs, who has previously coached at Berwick Academy and Marshwood High School, and most recently at UNH , where he served as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team, will take over the duties at Portsmouth this year in place of John Mulvey, who is taking a planned one-year leave of absence. Mulvey and his wife are expecting the birth of their twins any day.

‘I’m sure his family is the absolute only thing that means more to him then Portsmouth basketball,” Gibbs said. “I am just coming out of a similar situation, my girls are starting to get more independent and need less of dad. John is a friend and I have tremendous respect for what he has been able to build and sustain at Portsmouth. This is one of the best programs in the area and I’m truly honored to be a part of it.”

Mulvey plans to return next season.

“Coach Mulvey has our full support of this decision and we are very hopeful that he will return to the Clipper boys basketball program in the fall of 2024,” Kozikowski said. “We wish John and his family all the best.”

Gibbs played four seasons for UNH (2005-2009) and ranks eighth all-time in program history in points (1,329), field goal attempts (1,125) and three-point field goal percentage (39.4). His 233 three-point field goals made rank third all-time in team history, while his 592 three-point field goal attempts, 60 blocks and 3,711 minutes played all rank fifth in the Wildcat history book.

“I’m excited to become a part of this great community and help move Portsmouth basketball toward success,” Gibbs said.
