International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is being observed in Bangladesh along with the rest of the globe on Wednesday

A 16-day activism campaign under the theme, “Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!”, is also set to be launched on Wednesday and will continue till International Human Rights Day on December 10.

Government agencies, United Nations bodies, non-government actors, human rights defenders and civil society organizations join hands during the activism campaign to set up initiatives to end violence against women and girls.

In Gaibandha, under the 16-day activism campaign, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, Gaibandha range, has arranged a press conference denoting its day-to-day programs which will continue till December 10, International Human Rights Day.

“We will hold human chains, discussions with activists and the law enforcement agencies to prevent violence against women and raise awareness about all kinds of violence that women endure in their day to day life,” said Ringktu Prasad, general secretary of the organisation.

They also submitted a 15-point demand before reporters at the press conference held on Wednesday afternoon.

In Barisal, the Alliance for Observing International Day to Prevent Torture Against Women district unit formed a human chain and organised a rally on Wednesday morning in front of Ashwini Kumar Hall demanding tough action against oppressors.

In Magura, over a hundred women from different socio-cultural groups has come forth to observe International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The human chain, arranged by Naripokkho and Durbar Network and Rural Development centre, took place on Haji Road on Wednesday morning.

In Noakhali, the local district administration arranged a bicycle parade and mass rally under the slogan, “Rise Against Oppression”, in the district.

The program, led by the Deputy Commissioner of the district Khorshed Alam and Superintendent of Police Md Alamgir Hossain, began at 10am on Wednesday from Mujir Chattar and ended at the district’s Shilpakala Academy.
