Andy Robertson suggested that emotions were running high in the Molineux dressing room at half-time after Liverpool’s dismal first half showing at Wolves.

The Reds trailed 1-0 at the break in the Midlands thanks to an early goal from Hwang Hee-chan, and with Pedro Neto causing them all manner of problems down their right flank the visitors were very fortunate to go in at the break only one goal down.

They were to rally in the second half though, and after Cody Gakpo’s close range finish made it 1-1, Robertson – who was Liverpool ‘s captain for the day with Virgil van Dijk suspended and Trent Alexander-Arnold injured – popped up from a Mo Salah pass to put Liverpool ahead, with the win later sealed when Harvey Elliott’s shot was deflected in by home substitute Hugo Bueno.

Asked what was said at half-time by TNT Sports, Robertson said: “I can tell you some of it, but probably not all of it. Look, we can come up with all sorts of excuses about players flying halfway around the world and then having the early kick-off but it was just a poor first half.

“They were the better team, they created the better chances and we were making too many mistakes. But in the second half, we came out and changed the formation slightly, and had people pushing higher up the pitch.”

The goal came on Robertson’s 200th Premier League appearance, and was his first since scoring against the same opponents on the final day of the 2021-22 campaign. “I don’t get too many so it’s actually quite nice!” he said.

“We know they like to go quickly and counter off of corners so I got the ball and obviously Mo [Salah] can always pick out a pass so I thought I’d just run for it. Luckily I slotted it past the front post, and it was crucial to get our noses in front.

“I just like to play freely and I thought today I was able to do the same [going forward]. I was the last man [in defence], I drove forward and look, I don’t think I’ll be taking Mo’s place anytime soon! I think that one is pretty set in stone! But it’s just about occupying the spaces and finding the pass.”

The win took Liverpool top of the table prior to the rest of Saturday’s game, with the Reds winning four of their five matches so far following a summer rebuild.

“Yeah, it’s like a brand new start in a way,” continued Robertson. “We’ve had a lot of arrivals, and we have a new way of playing. We feel very free, and in the second half, we played with no fear. We have a strong squad, even with players missing like Trent and Thiago.”
