Lance Stroll completely smashed up his Aston Martin in a terrifying crash during Singapore Grand Prix qualifying.

The Canadian was completing his final flying lap at the end of Q1 when he lost control of his car. After snapping to the left, his car then span the opposite way at 150mph and slammed into the barrier.

The force of the impact completely ripped off his front left wheel and a significant amount of the chassis on that side of the car. The Aston Martin came back into the middle of the track and stopped on the tarmac, leading to the final moment of that part of the session being red flagged.

Fortunately, Stroll did not appear to suffer any lasting damage despite the huge impact. Replays showed that he was rocked around in the cockpit but the safety features on the car protected him, while he was also able to get his hands off the steering wheel in time.

He confirmed over the radio that he was conscious and alert and, after a couple of minutes, clambered out of the cockpit to be assessed by medics. But he would play no further part in qualifying and his mechanics have a huge job ahead to repair the car for Sunday’s race.

Stroll was taken to the medical centre straight after the incident to be assessed, as per F1 guidelines. Doctors will be able to assess where there is any damage to the Canadian to be concerned about, regarding his participation in the rest of the race weekend.

Q1 was not restarted given there was no time left on the clock, meaning those in the bottom five never got the chance to improve. The biggest casualty was Oscar Piastri, who was close to completing his lap but was unable to do so in time.

He will start the race 17th, with Valtteri Bottas one place ahead of him and closest to making it through to Q2. Logan Sargeant was 18th quickest but is being investigated by the stewards for impeding and could be given a grid drop.

Zhou Guanyu was 19th quickest with Stroll dead last on the road anyway before his crash. Lewis Hamilton was close to the bottom five but was safe when the red flags began to fly and through to Q2 as was planned.

But before that second part of the session could start, there was a lengthy clean-up operation going on on track. The marshals had not only car debris to clean up, but also a significant amount of fluid that had spilled from the destroyed car.
