Fans question on social media how Marcelo Bielsa is nominated for Best FIFA Men’s Coach

Marcelo Bielsa’s surprise inclusion on the five-man shortlist for FIFA Men’s Coach of the Year has incurred the wrath of some football fans on social media.

The Argentine was the eye-catching name on the five-man list but did manage to guide Leeds United to the Championship title last season.

The 65-year-old isn’t the only Premier League manager to have been shortlisted with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp also included after ending Liverpool’s 30-year wait to be crowned champions of England again.

Klopp also led the Reds to UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup glory.

Joining those two are Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick, who led them to another historic Treble; Sevilla’s Julen Lopetegui who won the Europa League last season and Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane who won LaLiga.

And when comparing Bielsa’s feats against the four other nominees, fans thought his achievements didn’t match in comparison.

‘I love Bielsa as much as the next bloke but how has he frauded his way onto this list,’ wrote one user.

Another stated decision to include Bielsa as ’embarrassing’ and ‘a slap on the face of football’, tweeting: ‘Marcelo Bielsa on the list for the FIFA Best awards is a slap on the face of football, putting him in the same category with managers like Klopp, Flick and co that were absolutely fantastic last season is embarrassing…..’

One fan suggested better-suited alternatives to Bielsa’s inclusion such as Gian Piero Gasperini who led unfancied Atalanta to the Champions League quarter-finals as well as third place in Serie A – just five points off the title.

‘This is really baffling. I love Bielsa but I don’t understand how he gets into this over Gasperini and how does Zidane get into this over [PSG boss Thomas] Tuchel? You may as well chuck [Maurizio] Sarri and Pippo Inzaghi in there at this rate.’

Meanwhile, others just expressed their pure outrage at Bielsa being selected.

‘Got time for Bielsa think he’s a great manager but Jesus Christ you’re taking the p*** here,’ wrote one while another tweeted: ‘Loool nah this is rigged. Bielsa? No doubt an amazing coach, but they are taking the p***.’
