Trueshan wins amazing Doncaster race as jockey Hollie Doyle admits trainer Alan King would have been ‘spitting feathers’

HOLLIE DOYLE daren’t think what Alan King was saying during the Doncaster Cup.
After pulling off a stunning win aboard the wayward Trueshan she grinned: “No doubt there would have been a few swear words.”

Because the mid-race move that Doyle made, sweeping from the tail of the field into a clear lead over six furlongs from home, would end in disaster 99 times out of 100.
But not this time and not with this horse, who has been rejuvenated for a wind operation and a 135-day break.
It was only a few months ago that King himself was questioning whether the dual Group 1 winner had gone at the game after below-par runs at Nottingham and Ascot.
He was given some TLC and spent several weeks chilling out – and clearly it has worked wonders.

Not that it was straightforward, as Trueshan was as keen as mustard from the outset under his pint-sized rider.
She did her best to try and restrain him, but it was not a fair fight.
After he’d pulled her arms out for the best part of a mile and a half, she decided to give in and let him stride on, which he did with relish.
He then veered off into the centre of the track and looked a sitting duck as the chasing pack closed up – but he somehow found another gear and went away again in the final 100 yards.
Sweet William was second, with the hot favourite Coltrane running a rare poor race and finishing last of five.
But this was Trueshan – and Doyle for that matter – back to his very best.

She said: “No doubt Alan will have been spitting feathers watching on from home when I made that move!
“We were going a pedestrian pace and it was interrupting his stride, so it was a make or break moment but I just decided to let him bowl along.
“The wind operation has definitely helped, he curled up earlier in the season but this was much more like it.
“I love him to bits, I’ve had a fair few spins on him and I haven’t been jocked off yet – I might have been if we lost today!”

Big Evs will have a crack at the Breeders’ Cup nextCredit: Getty
Earlier on the card, Big Evs bounced back from his Nunthorpe flop to win the Flying Childers Stakes.
Mick Appleby’s rapid two-year-old was out of the gates like a greyhound and kept up a relentless gallop to win by two and three quarter lengths.
The owners of the colt have rebuffed plenty of big money offers for the horse – with a bid of around £1.5 million rejected after Royal Ascot.
He is worth at least double that now, and he will head straight for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint next in the search of further riches.
Appleby said: “One bad run at York doesn’t make him a bad horse, so it was great to see him show his true form today.
“Nothing came to light after the Nunthorpe, we just put a line through it.
“He’ll go to America now and I think that race around a sharp five furlongs will really suit him.”
