Alessia Russo is up and running as an Arsenal player after scoring in Saturday’s UEFA Women’s Champions League clash with Paris FC.
The England striker – who joined the Gunners from Manchester United this summer – found the net to hand her side a vital lifeline after they’d found themselves 2-0 down and on the brink of Champions League elimination at the qualification stage.
But Russo robbed the ball from Paris FC defender Tennisoun Sissoko and fired home to make it 2-1, before Jen Beattie equalised dramatically in the 96th-minute to take the tie to extra-time.
The match proved to be a real rollercoaster of emotions with Arsenal falling behind again in extra-time, only for Russo to keep their hopes alive with her second goal of the game to make it 3-3 in the 116th minute.
Unfortunately for Russo and Arsenal, she was unable to repeat her goalscoring heroics in the shoot-out, and her miss along with Frida Maanum’s from 12-yards saw Paris FC win 4-2 and advance.
