Mayor Eric Adams warned that the influx of migrants will “destroy New York City” during a town hall on Wednesday, urging officials to change the right-to-shelter policy.

“Never in my life have I had a problem that I did not see an ending to,” Adams said. “I don’t see an ending to this. I don’t see an ending to this. This issue will destroy New York City.”

Intraparty disputes between New York lawmakers have escalated recently as Democrats debate how to handle 10,000 migrants a month. Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) have pleaded with the Biden administration to send federal resources and services to assist with the surge of migrants.

“Now we are getting people from all over the globe have made their minds up that they’re going to come through the southern part of the border and come into New York City,” Adams said. “And everyone is saying it’s New York City’s problem. Every community in this city is going to be impacted,” pointing to a $12 billion deficit that the crisis is expected to cause by mid-2025, affecting all services.

Adams called out Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) for sending migrants who crossed the southern border into Texas to New York. On Tuesday, the Republican governor said 35,000 migrants have been bused to Democratic sanctuary cities, with 13,300 to New York City, the highest number among the six municipalities.

“All of us are going to be impacted by this,” Adams said. “I said it last year when we had 15,000 and I’m telling you now with 110,000. The city we knew, we’re about to lose, and we are all in this together, all of us.”

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) denounced the Biden administration’s open border policies for contributing to crime in upstate New York on Wednesday, encouraging lawmakers to pass the House Republicans border bill.

Stefanik called the Secure the Border Act the “strongest border security bill in history,” adding the legislation would “put an end to the Biden border crisis.”

“Joe Biden’s Far Left open border policies have caused our Northern Border to see an unprecedented and historic surge in illegal immigration and Kathy Hochul’s ‘Sanctuary State’ policies have further incentivized this dangerous surge,” Stefanik said in a press statement. “Now we have reports of murder and rapes committed by illegal immigrants in Upstate New York.”
