Safe manufacturer Liberty Safe is taking heat after it confirmed it gave the Federal Bureau of Investigation access to an individual’s safe.

In a statement on Tuesday evening, Liberty Safe wrote, “On August 30, 2023, Liberty Safe was contacted by the FBI requesting the access code to the safe of an individual for whom they had a warrant to search their property. Our company protocol is to provide access codes to law enforcement if a warrant grants them access to a property.”

“After receiving the request, we received proof of the valid warrant, and only then did we provide them with an access code. Liberty Safe had no knowledge of any of the details surrounding the investigation at the time,” it continued.

The company insisted it is committed to “protecting the personal property and 2nd amendment rights of our customers,” and added it has “repeatedly denied requests for access codes” in the absence of a warrant.

Finally, the statement added, “We regularly update our policies to ensure both compliance with federal and state law and reasonable consumer privacy protections within the law. First and foremost, Liberty Safe is committed to preserving our customers’ rights, and we will remain unwavering in those values.”

Conservatives expressed dismay at a safe company having access codes to a safe. And many took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to blast the company for giving federal agents access to the safe.

Conservative outlet RedState reported the statement referred to the arrest of a Jan. 6 defendant, Nathan Hughes.

The conservative account Hodgetwins tweeted on Monday evening Hughes was “raided by the FBI and arrested at gun point.”

“The feds called the manufacturer of his Liberty Gun Safe and got the passcode to get into it too,” the tweet added.
