The Beavers won their first season-opening road game since 1999. OSU also completed a perfect opening week for the Pac-12, as conference teams went 12-0 in games from Thursday-Sunday.

Here’s a recap of how the Oregon State vs. San Jose State game unfolded:

LIVE UPDATES RECAP

FINAL: OREGON STATE 42, SAN JOSE STATE 17

— The SJSU kickoff goes to Oregon State. Chiles kneels it down once, and the game is over. The Beavers open their season with a 42-17 victory at San Jose State.

— Jay Butterfield takes over at quarterback for SJSU. He throws a wild pass while pressured that’s complete for 5 yards. Then Butterfield is sacked. A couple of plays later, the Spartans go for it on fourth down and just do convert. Butterfield looks deep for Nash, and it’s incomplete. He lofts one for Matthew Coleman, and it’s good for a 29-yard gain. He completes another, for 11 yards, down to the OSU 19. The next pass is broken up at the goal line by Jermod McCoy. Butterfield then finds Branden Alvarez for a 19-yard touchdown pass with just 4 seconds left in the game. The point after is good to make it 42-17. Oregon State 42, San Jose State 17

— Aidan Chiles takes over at QB for the Beavers. He fires complete on first down, a gain of 15 yards to Noga. Chiles then keeps it for a gain of 9 yards, to the SJSU 30-yard line. Fenwick carries for 5 yards and a first down. Chiles eludes pressure and throws to the goal line for Velling, but it’s knocked away by Jay’Vion Cole at the last moment. Chiles throws complete to Riley Sharp, a 22-yard play to the 3-yard line. Two plays later, Fenwick punches it in for the touchdown. Sappington’s extra point is good. Oregon State 42, San Jose State 10

— Cordeiro starts the SJSU drive with an inside screen pass to Nick Nash. He picks up 8 yards. The Spartans get a first down on a 4-yard pass play to Charles Ross. Cordeiro’s next pass, to the left sideline, is incomplete, but pass interference is whistled on OSU. So San Jose State gets it first and 10 from its 39. Cordeiro throws incomplete across the middle. After a completion to Olson for 9 yards, Conley crosses midfield and picks up the first down. Now another pass interference call on OSU. Both this drive have been on Tyrice Ivy Jr. Cordeiro drops back, has lots of time and throws to the end zone for Nick Nash, but it’s too high and incomplete. Cordeiro is sacked by John McCartan. On third and 16, Cordeiro is sacked again. He loses the ball, and the Beavers recover it. McCartan punched it out, and Kitan Oladapo recovered it. OSU takes over at its 46.

— The Spartans’ squib kick rolls to Jake Overman, who runs it ahead to the 34, and the Beavers will begin their drive from there. Damien Martinez runs it up the middle for 6 yards. He gets it again for 7 and a first down. OSU gets flagged for a false start. Another false start. On first and 20 from the 38, Uiagalelei fires complete to Jesiah Irish, and it’s a gain of 23 and a first down. Martinez gets the carry, but he’s stopped for a short loss. Martinez with the call again, and he runs right for 12 yards and the first down, to the SJSU 28. Uiagalelei throws to Bolden in the flat, and he’s quickly upended for no gain. Next play, Uiagalelei looks end zone, and finds an open Anthony Gould for the easy touchdown. The 28-yard TD pass makes it 35-10 with 10:13 to play. Oregon State 35, San Jose State 10

— On third and goal from the 2-yard line, Cordeiro keeps it and runs left. The ball pops loose, but Sam Olson recovers it in the end zone for a San Jose State touchdown. The extra point is good, and the Spartans pull within 28-10 early in the fourth quarter. Oregon State 28, San Jose State 10

END 3RD QUARTER: OREGON STATE 28, SAN JOSE STATE 3

— With a short field in front of him, Cordeiro begins the drive by throwing deep and incomplete. His receiver must have fallen down on the play because no one was near the pass. Cordeiro looks deep again, and he finds Malikhi Miller for a gain of 19 yards, down to the 3-yard line. Quali Conley carries for a yard, bringing up second and goal. Cordeiro throws to Olson in the left flat, but it’s stopped for no gain. The third quarter ends. San Jose State is down big but threatening.

— Uiagalelei starts the OSU drive with an incomplete pass, intended for Zachary Card. Uiagalelei gets sacked by Jay’Vion Cole. So it’s now third and 17 for the Beavers. Uiagalelei completes it to Card, but only for a pickup of 14. OSU will punt. The Spartans block the punt, but there’s a flag on the play. It’s illegal motion on the Beavers, and the Spartans decline it. A little momentum for SJSU here, as they get the ball back at the OSU 22.

— San Jose State starts at its 25. After two incompletions, Cordeiro scrambles for 11 yards and a first down. Cordeiro hits Nash for 9 yards and then Conley runs for 2 and another first down, to the OSU 43. A couple plays later, a false start makes it third and 8 for SJSU. They set up a screen, but it’s incomplete, intended for Conley. The Spartans decide to punt on fourth and 8. The punt is downed at the 22-yard line, where the Beavers will take over.

— OSU starts the drive from its 45-yard line. Uiagalelei throws complete to Velling, but only for a gain of a yard. Uiagalelei throws again, and a diving Gould pulls it in for a first down, to the SJSU 42. A short pass goes to Silas Bolden, and he’s hit late out of bounds by the Spartans’ DJ Harvey. That pushes the Beavers down to the SJSU 26. Fenwick carries up the middle to the 20, but there’s a flag for offensive holding. That makes it first and 20. Uiagalelei looks for Velling, but the pass is high and incomplete. Velling catches the next pass from Uiagalelei, and he dives ahead for a gain of 5. That brings up third and 15 from the SJSU 31. Uiagalelei has all the time he wants on to find a receiver, and he throws to the end zone, complete for the touchdown to Jeremiah Noga. It’s a 31-yard TD pass. Oregon State 28, San Jose State 3

— After Chevan Cordeiro throws incomplete on first down, Sam Olson pulls in Cordeiro’s pass for a gain of 26, to the SJSU 47. Then Conley runs for 8 yards, and he gets it again for no gain. Oregon State’s Calvin Hart is shaken up on the play. He’s receiving attention. Nick Nash with the catch on third and 2, but Ryan Cooper Jr. stops him short. SJSU goes for it on fourth and 1. Cordeiro’s pass is broken up by Jaden Robinson, and the Beavers get it back, at their 45-yard line.

— The Beavers receive the kickoff to begin the second half. The Spartans try an onside kick, but it goes out of bounds and OSU will get it at its 30. Damien Martinez is back in the game to start the half. He gets the call on a pitch to the right and gains 10 yards. DJ Uiagalelei fires complete over the middle to a leaping Silas Bolden, who is tackled after a gain of 13 yards, to the SJSU 46. Martinez runs up the middle for 6 yards. Martinez finds a hole in the right side of the line, then turns it upfield and dives ahead for a gain of 10, down to the SJSU 30. Jesiah Irish gets the ball on an end around, but he’s stopped after a gain of 2. Uiagalelei’s pass to the sideline is incomplete, intended for Zachary Card. On third and 8, Martinez runs left for 4 and is short of the first down. The Beavers elect to go for it on fourth and 3. Uiagalelei throws complete, but Irish is upended just a yard shy of the line to gain. So San Jose State takes over on downs at its 21-yard line.

HALFTIME: OREGON STATE 21, SAN JOSE STATE 3

— San Jose State takes a kneel-down, and it’s halftime. Oregon State leads it 21-3. Some halftime stats: Uiagalelei is 9 of 11 for 107 yards and a touchdown, plus he’s carried five times for 17 yards and 2 TDs. Damien Martinez has carried 10 times for 91 yards. — The Beavers’ Uiagalelei comes out throwing, with a pass to Gould for 19 yards, to the SJSU 45. Then Martinez has running room on the right side and finally is knocked out of bounds at the Spartans’ 17. It’s a 28-yard run, but Martinez is shaken up on the play. It looks like a lower-body injury as he is getting his leg stretched out. Timeout on the field, with 1:38 left in the half. Now Martinez is up and limping toward the OSU bench. The TV broadcast reports it’s a left calf cramp for Martinez. Back to the action, Fenwick carries on the pitch, down to the 11. Fenwick gets it again, and runs down to the 5. On first and goal, Fenwick takes it down to the 1. Uiagalelei keeps it on the QB sneak, and he’s in for the touchdown. Sappington’s point after is good, and the Beavers extend their lead to 21-3 with 14 seconds left in the first half. Oregon State 21, San Jose State 3

— San Jose State begins its drive at its 16-yard line. The Spartans pick up a first down, but then the Beavers come up with some great defensive plays on passes to force incompletions. SJSU punts it back to Oregon State. Gould runs it back 8 yards to the OSU 36, but then an unsportsmanlike penalty. But apparently there also was an unsportsmanlike call on the Spartans, so the ball stays at the 36.

— The Beavers begin their drive from the 27-yard line. Uiagalelei throws a nice pass to Silas Bolden, good for 18 yards to the SJSU 45. Then Damien Martinez carries for 5 yards, just past the midfield stripe. Martinez carries again, picking up 9 yards and a first down. After a 2-yard gain by Martinez, DJU scrambles for 2 more. He was open at the goal line and hauled it in. Atticus Sappington’s extra point is good, and with 4:21 to go in the half, the Beavers lead by 11. Oregon State 14, San Jose State 0

— San Jose State takes over at its 40. The Spartans put together a nice drive, with a short pass to Sam Olson that turns into a 17-yard gain, and later a Cordeiro scramble for 21 yards. But on third and 13 from the OSU 23, Cordeiro’s pass falls incomplete. SJSU lines up for a field goal, but the Spartans take their final timeout of the half before the play. Kyler Halvorsen lines up for a 41-yard field goal. The kick is good, so San Jose State gets on the board. Oregon State 7, San Jose State 3

END 1ST QUARTER: OREGON STATE 7, SAN JOSE STATE 0

— Oregon State starts its drive with a nice run to Martinez for a pickup of 11 yards. Martinez was patient and found space up the middle. Uiagalelei throws complete to Jermaine Terry for 4 yards. Martinez runs left for a yard, bringing up third and 5. Uiagalelei is hit as he throws it, and he overthrows his receiver. The first quarter ends, with the Beavers up 7-0.

— Cordeiro and the Spartans start from their 25. Cordeiro throws complete to Nick Nash for a gain of 7. Then it’s Quali Conley on a catch for 13 yards. Cordeiro is flushed and brought down by Joe Golden after a gain of 1. Now Conley with a nice run up the middle, slipping past tacklers for 18 yards. Akili Arnold made the stop but took a big hit from Conley in the process. The Spartans try a receiver pass, and James Rawls is there to break it up, incomplete. Jabari Bates runs for 1 yard. On third and 9, Cordeiro throws incomplete. SJSU is at the Oregon State 35, so the Spartans go for it on fourth down. But first they have to call their second timeout of the half to talk it over. SJSU gets flagged for a false start coming out of the timeout, and so the Spartans punt on fourth and 14. They pin the Beavers back at their 4-yard line.

— DJ Uiagalelei and the Beavers start with a pass to the right side, complete to Silas Bolden for 6 yards. Damien Martinez then runs left for no gain. On third and five, Uiagalelei runs up the middle on a QB draw for a pickup of 13 yards and a first down to the 36. Martinez gets a carry left, and he rumbles for 15 yards and into SJSU territory. Martinez runs it again, this time for a yard. Now the Spartans take a defensive timeout. Martinez with a burst on a run up the middle, and he picks up 19, to the SJSU 28. Then Uiagalelei hits Bolden on a nicely designed inside screen that’s good for 14 more. Martinez runs off the left side of the line for a gain of 2. DJU throws complete to Jesiah Irish, down to the 1-yard line. Then Uiagalelei keeps it, and he’s just short of the goal line. So now second and goal. Deshaun Fenwick takes a carry, but he’s short of the line as well. So now third and goal from inside the 1-yard line. Uiagalelei keeps it out of the shotgun, and it’s a touchdown. There’s a flag for offside, but it’s declined. The extra point is good. The Beavers go 82 yards in 11 plays and cap it off with the DJU TD run. Oregon State 7, San Jose State 0

— San Jose State receives the opening kickoff, and it’s a touchback. Oregon State forces a third and two, and the Beavers burn a timeout before the play. The Spartans get a swing pass from Chevan Cordeiro to Jabari Bates down the right sideline for a gain of 12 yards and a first down. But the San Jose State drive stalls after that, and the Spartans are forced to punt. Anthony Gould calls for a fair catch, and he’s bumped. But the flag is waved off because it’s ruled the player was blocked into Gould. So the Beavers will take over at their 18-yard line, with 12:10 to play in the first quarter.
