I’m A Celebrity 2020: Mo Farah ‘disappointed’ after winning 9 stars

Mo Farah #MoFarah

I’m A Celebrity’s Mo Farah admitted he was ‘disappointed’ in himself despite bagging an impressive nine stars during his very first solo trial on Friday.

The Olympic champion, 37, faced his fears in the Fort Locks challenge, in which he was knocked down by fish guts and covered in a number of critters as he attempted to win meals for camp.

But despite his valiant effort, which some viewers compared to 2004 campmate Paul Burrell’s Hell Holes Bushtucker Trial, Mo was unhappy with his result after being ‘scared and terrified’ in trial and wished he’d done better.

Following Jordan North’s triumphant trial on Thursday, in which he won 12 stars, the public decided to turn their focus on someone else and voted for Mo to do Friday’s trial.

Ahead of the task, the athlete expressed his concerns about what he could be facing as he said: ‘I hate not knowing’.

Reflecting on Mo’s nerves, Victoria Derbyshire stated: ‘I think he’s a little scared and I don’t blame him because it’s the fear of the unknown.’

While Russell Watson added: ‘It doesn’t matter whether you’re the fastest sprinter in the world, whether you’re the fastest racing driver in the world, it doesn’t make any difference. You’re taken out of that comfort zone and it makes you feel nervous.’

With Mo then speaking further on his fears, adding: ‘Everyone’s done well so far . . . I don’t want to be that person and let the team down and I can’t feed them. I’ll just do my best and that’s all I can do.’

The star later entered the trials area to face hosts Ant and Dec, where he explained how heading for an unknown trial left him uneasy.

‘It’s the not knowing. Everything I do, you train for it, you get through it, and you relate but knowing scares me’, he explained.

Ant then went on to outline the trial, explaining to Mo: ‘You have to retrieve the stars that are locked within the hell holes built into the castle walls. The keys you need to open the locks are on chains in holes on the opposite wall. The keys and the locks are colour coded.’

While Dec added: ‘When you find a star, put it in your star bag. Only stars that are in your star bag at the end of the trial will count.’

The first hole saw Mo dip his hand into offal as he rummage around to retrieve a yellow key, with the sportsman having to try three yellow locks to release the star.

When the grate finally opened, he then had to place his hand into a hole full of worms to unscrew the star and put it in his bag.

After completing the task, they visited Kiosk Cledwyn for the first time, leaving him unimpressed as they performed the birdy song dance.

After choosing a treat of jelly worms, Kiosk Cledwyn then called the camp, with Hollie answering the call.

The question posed to the campmates was ‘what percentage of British adults are reluctant to tell people their age? A/22% or B/10%.’

She said: ‘He invited me to Windsor for the weekend as we’re walking I’m seeing a table outside and there’s people sitting round it and I’m thinking that looks like the Queen and I remembered my dad had said to me that if you ever meet the Queen he said you curtsy and call her ma’am.

‘I grab her hand like this [handshake], forget all about the curtsy and I’m like really really pleased to meet you, really pleased to meet you.’

Enjoying the revelations, Shane then asked: ‘Did you know Diana much?’

Ruthie replied: ‘I met her a couple of times and one of my favourite times was we were at Balmoral, there was Diana, The Queen, Margaret, the Queen Mother, Charles, Edward, myself.’

She added that Diana was ‘lovely’, however she doesn’t ‘remember an awful lot because Charles gave me my first martini.’

‘I’d never tried it before so I was fairly… I had two of them and I was like woah…’, said Ruthie prompting Shane to tease: ‘Don’t tell me you go into show tunes’.

‘Let me tell you. Margaret she goes ‘yes, yes, oh sing us a song from that show you’re in’ and I was in Les Mis at the time. So I sang I Dreamed A Dream and I must have changed key three times because I was so p****d on martinis.’

Ruthie also reflected on how she met Edward during the insightful conversation.

She said: ‘It’s funny, it’s such a long time ago.. [he’s a] Lovely bloke. And I genuinely fell in love with him.

Shane then asked: ‘There was a headline years ago wasn’t there? The prince and the showgirl. Where did you meet him?’

‘He was a production assistant at Andrew Lloyd Webber’s. And he then called me himself [Andrew] and he wanted me to play the lead in A Star Is Born. And Edward was my point of contact.

‘He was the one who’d call me up and say you’re rehearsing at 2 o’clock or whatever. And he said to me would you like to come to mine and watch the film of A Star Is Born with me and you can have some dinner. I was like what, at the Palace, is that where you live?’

Shane said: ‘Is that what he meant? God that is so weird. Watching A Star Is Born with Prince Edward.’ Later he joked ‘Her first date was to Buckingham Palace. Can you believe that? Blimey, my first date was Little Chef.’

Shane continued. ‘So when did you think we’re going to do jiggy boom boom? We’re going to do jiggy boom boom soon. I’m going to be new queen of England.’

‘No’ protested Ruthie.

Elsewhere, Friday’s show saw Russell Watson open up to his campmates about his two terrifying brain tumours.

The tenor, 53, who battled two benign pituitary tumours back-to-back between 2006 and 2007, told how he ‘saw the light’ while lying in an MIR scanner.

Speaking to his fellow celebrities in Gwrych Castle about his battle, the opera star described how it was the children that gave him the motivation to fight for his life and beat the illness.

Discussing the two brain tumours he’d had, Russell explained: ‘The second one was the ‘one’, the first wasn’t life threatening, it was painful and I nearly lost my vision.

‘The second one was holy s***, I went home, went to bed and didn’t wake up because of a haemorrhage. My assistant found me, called the paramedics and I knew I was in trouble because the paramedic kept saying ‘stay with us, stay with us’.

‘We got to the hospital and they operated. One of the most emotional things after I came out of intensive care was this bloke came up to me and said ‘nice to see you’re doing well Mr Watson’ and I realised it was ‘stay with us, stay with us’.

His pal Vernon Kay then enquired if he’d he’d seen the light as is sometimes claimed by people, with Russell replying ‘big time’.

He went on to explain the moment he had noticed a ‘strip of light’ while in hospital and thinking he was about to die, before the thought of his children brought him back.

Russell said: ‘I was in the MIR scanner and I could see this long strip of light, like when you’re a kid and you used to keep your bedroom door open.

‘It was a light strip and I was thinking if I go to that door I’m out of here and the pain stops and I’m away and all I could think about was my children and slowly slowly whilst thinking about my children the clatter clatter of the MRI came back and I thought I’m going to beat this.’

Vernon the got up to hug his pal after he opened up on his scary health ordeal.

In September 2006, Russell discovered her had developed a tumour which was the size of two golf balls after his peripheral vision became blurry.

Following a trip to LA, he underwent a five-hour emergency operation to remove the eight-centimetre tumour at St George’s Hospital in Tooting.

Just over a year later in October 2007, the classical singer’s vision deteriorated as his tumour returned on his pituitary gland, which was bleeding into his brain.

Just days after his MRI scan, Russell underwent another emergency procedure in Cheadle’s Alexandra Hospital, and later recovered with an extensive rehabilitation programme.

Meanwhile, the episode saw plenty of name-dropping as  Beverley Callard did not shy away from telling her fellow stars that she used to train with Hollywood royalty Arnold Schwarzenegger.

And the parasport athlete, 26, was incredibly impressed with Beverley’s massaging talents, leading the actress to reveal that she had done a sports massage course.

But Beverley then further surprised her campmate as she dropped the bombshell that she trained with none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger.

She went on to reveal to Hollie that it took the Terminator star, 73, a grand total of 18 months to build each of his calves up half an inch.

She continued: ‘Nothing surprises me with Beverley, she trained with Arnold Schwarzenegger!!’
