Senator Lidia Thorpe will address the National Press Club of Australia on Wednesday afternoon, delivering a speech titled “It’s Time For Us To Mature As A Nation”.
Ms Thorpe promised to tell Australians the “hard truths” in a bid to move forward with reconciliation.
“I’ll take people on a bit of a journey so that we can educate on the effects of invasion, particularly, you know, deaths in custody and removal of children, the destruction of land and water,” she told ABC Radio National in the hours before her speech.
“I think that some truths, hard truths need to be told. And people in this country should accept what is going on so that we can move forward together.”
Her address comes as debate around the Voice to Parliament proposal continues to heat up.
Ms Thorpe left the Greens earlier this year to sit as an independent amid disagreement over the party’s Voice stance.
She has claimed the Voice will “continue to oppress” First Nations people and has instead called for treaty.
