Rangers star’s European homecoming edges closer after £7.7m exit

New Rangers signing Sam Lammers is now in line for a Champions League homecoming at PSV Eindhoven; if the Gers can overcome Servette.

Rangers have got a tough clash with the Swiss Super League side in Champions League QR3 to overcome first but after the draw next week the club know who could await them in the Playoff round.

And now that looks more likely to be familiar Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven than Austrian outfit Sturm Graz after the Dutch club showed their pedigree with a thumping 4-1 victory in the Netherlands.

Sturm Graz have it all to do to reach the Champions League and will need a three goal swing in Austria next week if they’re to make the Playoff round of qualification.

Rangers are well familiar with PSV Eindhoven having overcome the Dutch side at the Champions League Playoff stage last season and Isaac Babadi, Luuk de Jong and Ibrahim Sangare sent a reminder of what potentially awaits if the Gers can overcome Servette.

Sam Lammers one step closer to PSV Edinhoven homecoming

Whilst Rangers have yet to kick off their two-legged affair with the Swiss, Sam Lammers is one of several PSV Eindhoven subplots which could potentially keep headline writers busy if they do.

Rangers will pay up to £3.5m to sign the Dutch striker from Serie A side Atalanta, with the 26-year-old settling into life at Ibrox and looking for a shot at Champions League glory.

But if Sam Lammers is to get it then he will likely have to overcome former club PSV Eindhoven, where the Dutch forward came through the youth ranks and left for Italy in 2020.

The fact Atalanta signed a reported €9m (£7.7m) deal to bring Sam Lammers to Bergamo back then speaks volumes about the gangly forward’s ability and Rangers will hope to harness that potential in the seasons ahead.

Whilst Sam Lammers could be returning to PSV, Malik Tillman could also be returning to Glasgow with reports suggesting Bayern are to send the USA international on loan to the Philips Stadion this season.

Manager Peter Bosz – formerly of Bayer Leverkusen and Lyon – is also very familiar to Rangers and Michael Beale having come up against the club in the Europa League during Steven Gerrard’s reign.

Whilst Rangers still have to overcome Servette, the result against Sturm Graz means a Champions League Playoff tie with PSV is certainly one step closer and all eyes will now be on what happens at Ibrox this evening.
