Rapinoe, who came on in extra time, was among the players to miss from the spot in the surprise defeat for the world champions.

Despite the USA winning the previous two tournaments, a number of stars have suffered criticism since their last-16 exit. One of them being Rapinoe, who confirmed her retirement from football in the wake of the defeat.

Morgan recently retweeted a video of Rapinoe at the ESPY Awards in 2019 where her interaction with a young fan was called into question.

The boy approached the star to sign a football and whilst Rapinoe complied, she did not acknowledge him at any point of the exchange.

Although the video was taken four years ago, Morgan wasted no time in condemning the 38-year-old.

Morgan posted the clip alongside the caption: “Doesn’t even look at him. Diabolical arrogance.”

His tweet led to an unexpected alliance with Kyrgios, who also appeared to bemoan Rapinoe’s actions.

The 2022 Wimbledon finalist quote tweeted Morgan, writing: “Hahahahahaha one thing me and Piers agree on.”

Rapinoe has gained widespread attention from various quarters pertaining to her stance as an activist.

She made headlines in 2016 when kneeling during the national anthem before an international match, in solidarity with NFL player Colin Kaepernick.

A year earlier, Rapinoe stood in silence during the national anthem before speaking out on the use of artificial turf in the women’s game.

In 2019, Rapinoe led a group of 27 US teammates on filing a lawsuit against the United States Soccer Federation, accusing it of gender discrimination in hope of achieving equal pay alongside the men’s team.

Rapinoe has also backed the inclusion of transgender women in women’s sports.
