Jonny Evans to Celtic transfer built on Brendan Rodgers bromance as star turns Parkhead fan after ‘fantastic’ first era

Free agent Jonny Evans is reportedly on Brendan Rodgers radar as he looks to add to the Celtic defence for the new campaign.

And the former Leicester City boss hasn’t been shy in showing the love to the veteran defender throughout the years – and that bromance with the Northern Ireland international could pave the way for a move to Parkhead. Reports south of the border claim that the 35-year-old is on the Scottish Premiership radar with Rodgers keen to bring Evans in to add competition for Ange Postecoglou’s first-choice pairing Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt.

Stephen Welsh and Yuki Kobayashi are also options at centre-back, while Tomoki Iwata can also drop into the heart of the defence. However, Rodgers turned to tried and tested defender Kolo Toure when he first arrived at Parkhead and his second coming could see Evans reunite with the boss in Glasgow’s east end. Rodgers has already recognised the bargain that Evan could offer – declaring him the “steal of the century” when contrasting him to Harry Maguire’s exit for Manchester United.

He said back in 2019: “For £3.5m it’s the absolute steal of the century. He’s a top, top centre-half. I’ve known him a long time, in terms of his playing qualities. His reading of the game…He’s a top-level centre-half.”

Rodgers has also insisted that Evans should still be a player at Old Trafford, stating last summer that he still had the class to play at United: “Jonny is a Manchester United player. It’s as simple as that.

“You have only got to look at his performance level to know they would absolutely love to have someone like him, fully fit and playing at centre half. I’m pretty sure of that.”

The Celtic boss named Evans as Leicester captain last summer – and could turn to him again to bring “values” he wants to see in Parkhead during his second stint. He said: “Jonny represents the collective standards and values of these players and what they stand for. He’s a player of huge experience.”

And for Evans part – he has hailed the impact of his manager and even admitted he kept an eye on his Celtic side before he made the switch to the Foxes. On the boss, he said previously: ““I’ve been a long-time admirer (of Rodgers). He’s a top manager.

“I played against his Liverpool team and it was always so tough, one of the most difficult games in the Premier League – they had two strikers, real pace and they were dynamic. And what he achieved at Celtic was fantastic. I watched a few of their games in Europe and it was fantastic football: Hopefully he can bring that to us and get us playing in a good, attacking way.”

There is clearly a mutual admiration between the pair. It could be experienced ally in the dressing room Rodgers is looking for following his return.
