The U.S. men’s national team fell short of its goal of defending its Gold Cup title, losing out in a penalty shootout to Panama.

The pair played a scoreless first 90 minutes before heading to extra time, where both scored in the first 15 minute period. Panama’s Ivan Anderson broke the deadlock in the 99th minute, but the USMNT’s Jesús Ferreira scored on a volley just before halftime of extra time. Ferreira then missed the team’s first penalty of the night and was briefly in the clear when Matt Turner saved Cristian Martinez’s shot, but Cristian Roldan’s miss in sudden death proved costly for the hosts.

The win means Panama advances to the finals of the Gold Cup for the third time in their history.
