Ex-Rangers star Duncan Ferguson AXED from management role after winning just ONE game

DUNCAN FERGUSON has left his post at Forest Green Rovers, according to reports.

The former Rangers and Everton star won just ONE of his 18 games in charge of the Gloucestershire club, failing to keep them in League One.

According to talkSPORT, 51-year-old Ferguson has quit with immediate effect.

Ferguson built up an excellent reputation as a coach whilst at Goodison Park ahead of his first role in management at FGR.

Club chairman Dale Vince posted a statement which read: “It’d been a privilege to work with Dunc these last few months and this was a very difficult decision to make. “I’m grateful to Dunc for joining us in such difficult circumstances and for all of his hard work at the club.  

“But I feel this is overall the right decision for everyone and I wish Dunc well in his next coaching role. We are parting as friends. You can’t ask for much more than that.”

He spent five years in Marbella after hanging up his boots from playing in 2006 but got back in touch with old boss David Moyes to ask about him coaching the youths at Finch Farm.

Originally working on a voluntary basis under fellow Scot Alan Irvine as the head of the club’s academy, Ferguson began to work on earning his coaching badges and in February 2014 he was promoted to the first-team coaching staff at Everton.

Five years later came the first of two stints as caretaker boss at Goodison.

The first was when Marco Silva was sacked and he guided the Toffees to a memorable 3-1 win over Chelsea that lifted them out of the relegation zone.

Carlo Ancelotti was appointed as Silva’s successor and he named Ferguson as his No2, a role he kept under Rafa Benitez.

When ex-Liverpool manager Benitez was sacked, Ferguson was again put in temporary charge.

When Frank Lampard was given the job in January 2022, Ferguson stayed on as first team coach for six months but left the club last summer.

Upon his appointment at Forest Green in January, Ferguson said: “I’m really delighted to join FGR for the next step of my career, and I plan to be here for a while.

“We have a bit of a fight on our hands to stay up in League One and I am ready for the challenge.”

After a record of one win, three draws and 14 losses in 18 matches, FGR were relegated to League Two after a 5-1 home defeat to Barnsley on April 15 (the earlier that any EFL side had their relegation confirmed this season).

At this point it’s not known whether Ferguson is eyeing up another management role or not, with vacancies at Sheffield Wednesday among others in the EFL.
