Red Sox-Yankees on back-to-back Sunday nights? Alex Cora says it’s too much

Good Sunday #GoodSunday

BOSTON — Boston manager Alex Cora understands what Red Sox-Yankees means from a baseball standpoint. Former ESPN analyst Alex Cora understands what the Boston-New York rivalry means from a TV ratings standpoint.

But two weeks in a row on Sunday Night Baseball? He’s not a fan.

“Back-to-back Sunday night games? With all the respect to ESPN, come on,” Cora said. “There’s other teams out there people want to watch. You know how good the ratings are gonna be on Father’s Day for Red Sox, Yankees. But back-to-back weekends, you’re probably gonna do something else with your parents with your family, you know, because you just saw it last weekend.”

It’s not like they didn’t have another good matchup to choose from on Sunday either. The Giants are at the Dodgers on Sunday and both of those traditional rivals entered the weekend in playoff position. Last week, the American League West-leading Rangers played the Rays, who are atop the A.L. East.

It was scheduled to be back-to-back national TV nights too as FOX had the Saturday game between the two rivals for the second straight weekend. It was also the second straight Sunday night on a day devoted to a parent that featured Boston on the national TV game. This week’s Father’s Day ESPN game follows a Mother’s Day Sunday night game vs. the Cardinals.
