Weston McKennie, in his torn-up United States jersey, blew kisses to a rattled crowd after drama ensued during the second half of the USMNT’s match against arch-rival Mexico in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinal Thursday in Las Vegas.

McKennie and Mexico’s César Montes were sent off with red cards after Montes kicked Folarin Balogun’s feet from behind while the United States held a 2-0 lead. The Little Elm native McKennie retaliated and got into a scuffle with Mexico players, which earned him a red card.

Mexico lost the match 3-0, but more critically for the USMNT, McKennie won’t be available for the final against Canada on Sunday.

The two red cards were the first of four total in the game. United States defender Sergiño Dest and Mexico defender Gerardo Arteaga also received red cards in the 85th minute after a scuffle on the sidelines.

Nine other players were shown yellow cards in the match, including Christian Pulisic and Guillermo Ochoa in the final four minutes before second-half stoppage time.
