Who is starting for the Mets?
Max Scherzer is making his 11th start of the season for the Mets. The righthander is looking to bounce back after a rough outing his last time out against the Braves.
Scherzer was cruising through five innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth and his day came to an end. He allowed a season-high 11 hits and five runs over 5.2 innings in the loss.
Prior to running out of gas, he was able to induce 19 whiffs and ten strikeouts, also a season high.
Scherzer has had a bit of an up-and-down year in his second season in New York. Over 53.1 innings of work, he’s posted a 3.71 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 58 strikeouts.
In 53 Interleague starts, Scherzer has a record of 23-19 with a 2.75 ERA. He also owns the record for the most strikeouts in Interleague play history with 452.
We’ll see how he fares tonight against a Yankees lineup that’s struggled to score runs without Aaron Judge.
Who is starting for the Yankees?
Luis Severino takes the ball for the Yankees in this one.
The righthander has had a bit of a rough time since returning from a lat injury he suffered during spring training. Severino has a 5.75 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and just 18 strikeouts over five outings.
After two strong starts, Severino has struggled over his last two.
He’s failed to give the Yankees more than five innings each time and has seen his velocity dip. He’s also had a hard time limiting the long ball, allowing three homers in each of those starts.
Severino will look to right the ship in Queens. In four career appearances against the Mets, he has a 2.75 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 27 strikeouts.
Upcoming schedule
The Mets and Yankees close out their quick two-game set on Wednesday at 7:10 p.m.
We should be in for a great pitchers duel in this one as Justin Verlander (2-3, 4.85 ERA) faces off with Gerrit Cole (7-1, 2.84 ERA).
