Robbie Savage apologises after fans complain he went over the top during West Ham United’s victory

Robbie Savage was criticised for his commentary during West Ham United’s win over Fiorentina on Wednesday night, and appeared to apologise on air.

It was a hell of a night for West Ham as they won their first major trophy since lifting the FA Cup in 1980 and their first success in Europe since the days of Bobby Moore and Geoff Hurst.

Manager David Moyes ran onto the pitch to congratulate his players showing the kind of speed that he didn’t even have during his playing days.

Fans watching on television also weren’t too happy with the coverage of the game and specifically the commentary provided by the controversial Savage.

The former Birmingham City midfielder was accused of going over the top, shouting: “West Ham are massive!”, when Said Benrahma scored from the penalty spot.

At full time the Welshman got even more excited at Moyes’ celebration, belting out: “Go on Moyesy!”, much to the chagrin on those watching.

After the trophy lift the 48-year-old seemed to have understood the criticism he was getting and acknowledged it whilst still on BT Sport commentary.

“Congratulations, football is all about emotion,” Savage said.

“You get carried away in commentaries but it’s an entertainment business for enjoyment.

“These are the moments as footballers and now we are in a privileged position in our roles.

“You know, at times you do get carried away and emotion takes over but that’s football and that’s why we love this game so much.

“That’s why it’s the best game in the world.”
