  • The wrestler’s family praised the Vaziri as not just a famed performer, but as a “beloved family man” as well.

“Beyond the glitz and glamour of the squared circle, The Iron Sheid was a man of immense passion and dedication. He embodied resilience. He overcame countless challenges in his life, both inside and outside the wrestling ring. His journey from a small village in Iran to becoming one of the most recognizable figures in the world of wrestling is a testament to his unwavering determination.

Born in Damghan, Iran, Vaziri came up competing in Greco-Roman wrestling, eventually moving to the United States where he became a coach for the U.S. Olympic team.

Vaziri began his professional wrestling career in the 70s, adopting his now-famous appearance, including a mustache and an Arab-style Keffiyeh. He went on to become a star in the WWF, becoming World Champion in 1983 when he defeated reigning champion Bob Backlund.

“With his imposing physique, curled boots and dreaded Camel Cutch finishing hold, The Iron Sheik’s larger-than-life personality and natural gift for inciting crowds across the globe helped him become one of the greatest villains in sports-entertainment history,” WWE wrote in a statement. Yet, over time that awe-inspiring showmanship not only earned the respect of his peers, but the WWE Universe as a whole, making him a beloved figure. The Iron Sheik first excelled in the world of Greco-Roman Wrestling, competing in the Amateur Athletic Union and becoming a gold medalist at 180.5 pounds in 1971.”
