Gunther believes he’ll face off against Cody Rhodes again

The restyling universe is buzzing with excitement after Gunther “replied” to Cody Rhodes’ earlier statement that he’d love to have a chance to face The Ring General in a singles match.

Gunther and Cody Rhodes were the last two survivors of the 2023 WWE Men’s Royal Rumble match where Rhodes took out Gunther to book his shot against Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39.

The American Nightmare initially piqued fan interest after naming Gunther as one of the top three opponents he’d like to step into the ring with after concluding his story with the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, Roman Reigns.

The others are Johnny Gargano, the first-ever NXT Triple Crown winner who was once called “The Heart and Soul of NXT”, and Edge, the seven-time World Heavyweight Champion.

Now, several months later, Gunther named Rhodes as someone he sees having multiple matches against in the future, saying (via WrestlingInc):

I was fine before [in the Rumble match], but I was always looking at things like, ‘Okay, now everybody else is gone. Now we can do some cool stuff.’ That was kind of the feeling behind it. That was super cool to add a little something on top of it at the end of that match.

And in general, I think Cody is someone who is maybe my ideal opposite right now, and going forward it’s going to be a match that I’m very confident we’re going to do that match a couple of times in the next years.

But, this is probably way further into the future.

At the moment, Rhodes is embroiled in a feud against Brock Lesnar. The two are currently 1-1 and are expected to face off again in an upcoming PLE, presumably Money in the Bank in the UK in July.

Afterward, all bets are off, and maybe, just maybe, Gunther will get his other wish and take on Lesnar next.

Previously, it was reported that Lesnar and Gunther were being planned for this year’s SummerSlam.

Gunther said in the same appearance on the “My Love Letter to Wrestling” podcast that he’d love to share the ring with the WWE free agent in the United Kingdom.

The prospect of the match-up happing on UK soil has fans on tenterhooks after Gunther’s title defense against Sheamus at Clash at the Castle in Cardiff, Wales, which was hailed as one of the best matches of the year. Unfortunately, it’s unclear when the WWE is coming back to the UK, so this may not happen for a while.

In the meantime, excited fans can look forward to the respective storylines of each wrestler. Gunther is currently occupied with Matt Riddle while Lesnar has yet to respond to Rhodes after being called out multiple times.
