Your Memorial Day guide to road work in Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County

Memorial Day #MemorialDay

ANN ARBOR, MI – Memorial Day weekend may be the unofficial start of summer, but construction season is already in full swing.

If you’re gearing up for travel over the holiday, some state road construction projects are suspended between 3 p.m. Friday, May 26 and 6 a.m. Tuesday, May 30, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

That doesn’t include all Washtenaw County projects on state roadways. Closures at the U.S. 23 and Willis Road interchange will stay in place, as will lane restrictions at U.S. 23 and Michigan Avenue.

Here’s a full list of road work that could affect travel and commutes for the weekend beginning May 26 and the week ahead.

ANN ARBOR

Washtenaw Avenue: The street along the University of Michigan’s central campus will see double-lane closures in both directions between Zina Pitcher Place Street and Geddes Avenue through Friday, June 9 for a UM utility project.

One lane of traffic will remain open in each direction through the work zone.

Glen Avenue: The street is set to close to all traffic beginning May 30 and ending Friday, July 21 for a utility project.

Huron Parkway/Glazier Way: Intermittent lane closures will be in place on Huron Parkway in both directions between Geddes and Hubbard roads for a road repair and resurfacing project.

On Glazier Way between Green and Earhart roads, lane closures are also possible, with the roadway slated to close in the eastbound direction as of Wednesday May 17.

Work is expected to be completed on both roads by Tuesday, June 6.

Geddes Avenue: The street is closed to through traffic between Observatory and Hill streets for a resurfacing and utility project.

The project will proceed in phases, with the first estimated to conclude on June 9, when Geddes will reopen to westbound traffic only.

South Main Street: The street is closed between Liberty and Huron streets for the second phase of a major resurfacing project. The Washington and Main intersection is also closed.

Pedestrians can still access the businesses in the Main Street commercial district. Crews will replace a water main, make crosswalk improvements and put new pavement on the crumbling downtown street.

The project is slated to run until Wednesday, July 12 with a third phase in the cards within the Main/Huron intersection, beginning after the Ann Arbor Art Fair, July 20 to 22.

South State Street: The downtown street is closed to vehicle traffic between North University Avenue and Huron Street until Friday, Sept. 1, for the second phase of a major overhaul extending curb-less design in the area near the University of Michigan Diag and bringing water and sewer upgrades.

The intersections on either side of the work zone will remain open. Regular updates can be found online from the Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority.

Broadway Street: The street is closed through Monday, Aug. 21 between the Traver Creek pedestrian crossing island, just south of Jones Drive, and Plymouth Road for a project bringing water main upgrades, sidewalk improvements and pavement resurfacing.

The dead-end section of Broadway southwest of the roundabout next to the Beekman on Broadway development is also closed as crews complete utility installations through June 9.

Platt Road: The road on the city’s east side is reduced from four lanes to two between Packard Road and Huron Parkway until Friday, Aug. 1.

The restrictions will allow for crews to replace an existing water main, as well as replace curb, sidewalk and ramps while resurfacing Platt Road. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

Scio Church Road: A section of the road between South Seventh Street and South Maple Road is closed for a resurfacing project, bringing improvements for pedestrians and cyclists, through Friday, June 16.

Construction on the first phase of the project is set to run through Friday, May 26, when Scio Church Road is scheduled to reopen in the eastbound direction, and officials will notify residents of a new traffic pattern.

During the project, the Maple Road intersection will remain open to traffic turning left onto Maple or right onto Scio Church to ease congestion because of the damage to the Liberty Road I-94 overpass.

Memorial Day parade closures: Several streets will close from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, May 29 for the Glacier Highlands Neighborhood Association Memorial Day Parade. They are:

  • Frederick Drive from Greenbrier Boulevard to Middleton Drive
  • Middleton to Bardstown Trail
  • Bardstown to Barrister Road ending before Larchmont Drive
  • Larchmont between MacGregor Lane and North Folkstone Court
  • Long-term projects: North Fifth Avenue from Detroit to Catherine streets will have a lane shift through June 2024 for a new development.

Eastbound South University Avenue traffic between East University Avenue and Church Street is closed long-term for high-rise construction.

The Liberty Road bridge over I-94 is reduced to single-lane traffic, with temporary traffic signals, until further notice after being damaged by a truck on March 13.
