Tyrone Mings ‘very lucky’ as controversial Liverpool footage emerges – expert

Alan Hutton has claimed Tyrone Mings was “very lucky” to avoid a red card against Liverpool on Saturday (20 May).
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa right-back said that even Mings will know he was fortunate to escape a sending off.
As shown on Sky Sports (22 May), the Villa defender was booked by referee John Brooks for a high challenge on Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo in the 1-1 draw at Anfield.
As relayed by the Guardian (22 May), the Reds have asked PGMOL for an explanation as to why Mings was not more severely punished for his challenge on Gakpo.
The draw at the weekend effectively ended the Merseysiders’ hopes of Champions League football next season with just one match left to play of the 2022-23 season.
When asked for his assessment of Mings’ challenge and the yellow card that followed, Hutton told Football Insider: “I think he is very lucky.
“I have done it myself before so I am not passing judgement.
“I think what gets him away with it is that the force is not following through. I know he has got the studs on his chest and has made contact but there was not intent there. He has not gone to hurt him.
“I think he has gone to win the ball, he has caught him on the follow through but it was not a motion of force. I think that is how he gets away with it but it is so close.
“Even he will be thinking ‘I was lucky to get away with that’.”
In other news, big hint emerges from Brighton that midfielder is heading to Liverpool.
