Mikel Arteta offered his congratulations to Manchester City after the were confirmed as Premier League champions following Arsenal’s defeat against Nottingham Forest.

The Gunners late season collapse culminated in a third defeat in five games at the City Ground as Forest preserved their top flight status with a deserved 1-0 victory which came courtesy of Taiwo Awoniyi’s first-half goal.

Arsenal rarely looked like finding their way back into the contest and looked resigned to their fate during a second half in which they failed to manufacture a clear goalscoring opportunity.

A disconsolate Arteta conceded afterwards that there would have to be a lot of soul searching over the next few weeks after City were confirmed as champions for a third season in a row.

He told Sky Sports: ‘First of all congratulations to City for winning the championship and obviously a really sad day for us after everything we’ve done in the season.

‘Today we gave a goal away a huge chance away that we gave them and weren’t good enough to break them down. We could have played here three hours and this feeling we didn’t have enough to do that.

‘We face it, it is my responsibility and I have to take it.’

Those sentiments were echoed by goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale who insisted that Arsenal should be proud of what they achieved throughout the season, despite ultimately falling short.,

He said: ‘The dust won’t settle until the summer. We are very disappointed how it has happened but we are proud we pushed all the way.

‘Credit to Forest, they were fighting for their lives. We knew the type of game it would be. We just couldn’t break them down. We lacked that magic moment and we got punished on the counter attack.

‘We pushed and pushed but couldn’t break through them.’
