And QPR’s £2 million capture from Livingston – he was still playing for Queen of the South up to 2019 – produced another massive display against Serbia before being subbed.

It was only his sixth cap – he’s scored twice – but already he’s guaranteed a place in Scottish football folklore after helping inspire the national team to a first tournament qualification since France ’98.

Now Dykes and every Scotland hero can look forward to Euro finals group games next summer against Croatia and the Czech Republic at Hampden plus England at Wembley.

And the 25-year-old said: “It’s amazing.

“This is why I wanted to come to Scotland to try doing.

“Now we’ve done it and just to be a part of it with the boys and the gaffer, it’s one of the biggest things in my career and my life – and I’ll remember it forever.

“It was very nervous at the end and I can see why managers lose a lot of hair quick!

“We made it hard for ourselves at the end.

“But we just dug deep and got through the penalties and a great save from big Marsh at the end.

“It was just absolute scenes at the end.

“The finals is where Scotland should be.

“Now the players who are going to be playing in those games can show how good Scotland are – and that we should be in those kinds of tournaments.

“And EVERY time they come.

“Tonight’s been amazing – but once we get to the finals we can focus on proving to the world that Scotland is a great nation.

“Exactly where we should be.

“So far international football’s been absolute great. So far I haven’t lost.

“We’ll keep that run going.

“I’ve just enjoyed every moment. The players have been great, the gaffer’s been great, it’s been the best season of my life playing for Scotland.

“I cherish it, I just love it.”
