More storms brewing: Another round of severe weather expected in Louisville Monday

Another Monday #AnotherMonday

More storms are expected Monday after two tornadoes touched down in the Louisville area Saturday evening into Sunday morning, causing widespread damage.

Meteorologists from the National Weather Service’s Louisville office said more showers and severe storms are expected throughout the day and into the night — ranging from gusty winds to large hail. More isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out, the service said.

The weather service also confirmed two EF-1 tornadoes touched down in New Albany, Indiana, over the weekend. Its storm survey found evidence that one the tornadoes impacted portions of the Indiana University Southeast campus.

The estimated peak winds were 105 mph, the service said in a statement.

The storms over the weekend left nearly 10,000 people around Lexington and Louisville without power Sunday.

Monday: Periods of showers and storms are expected throughout the day in Louisville, but the greatest severe threat will occur between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m., according to Ron Steve, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service of Louisville.

“The main threat with these storms is going to be damaging winds,” Steve said. “If you get a severe thunderstorm warning, at the very least make sure you’re in some kind of substantial building.

“All severe hazards will be possible including a few brief spin-up tornadoes, but large hail, frequent lightning and damaging winds will be the main threats,” the NWS said in its morning hazardous weather outlook.

Temperature: Mostly cloudy and humid. 80 degree high, 63 degree low.

Tuesday through the rest of the week: Thunderstorms will return to the forecast Thursday through Sunday. The most likely timing for stronger storms will begin in the afternoons and evenings — especially Friday and into the weekend, the service predicts.
