Western Michigan caps wild win over Toledo with fake-spike touchdown play

Western Michigan defeated Toledo, 41-38, on Wednesday night in one of the wildest college football finishes in quite some time.

This was peak #MACtion.

When Toledo running back Bryant Koback scored a 4-yard touchdown to give the Rockets a 10-point lead with less than three minutes to play, prospects for victory looked bleak for the Broncos.

However, with 45 seconds left, Western Michigan quarterback Kaleb Eleby scored on a 1-yard sneak, with a chance to trim Toledo’s lead to three with a successful extra point. 

This is where things start to get weird. 

Broncos kicker Thiago Kapps missed the point after attempt. However, Western Michigan’s onside kick was recovered … by their punter, Nick Mihalic.

Three plays later, Eleby hit receiver D’Wayne Eskridge for an 18-yard gain that put the ball at the Toledo 9-yard line with under 30 seconds to go.

Western Michigan lined up for an apparent play to spike the ball to stop the clock. Instead, Eleby faked the clock-killing spike and found a wide-open (like, wide wide open) Jaylen Hall for the winning touchdown. 

In the final seconds, Western Michigan safety Harrison Taylor intercepted Toledo quarterback Eli Peters’ desperation heave and the Broncos completed the improbable late-game rally.

While Western Michigan improved to 2-0, Toledo fell to 1-1.
