Frozen 3 Can Continue 1 Opening Trend To Finally Tell An Important Story

The first two Frozen movies have established an opening scene trend, and now Frozen 3 can continue this to explore a story that audiences have been waiting on. Disney has found massive success with the franchise, and though either of the first two films could have been a comfortable end to Anna and Elsa’s story, audiences have asked for more. In the case of Frozen 2, this meant that the queen and princess of Arendelle could learn more about their parents’ pasts and understand why Elsa was granted her powers. Now, going into Frozen 3, more unanswered questions can be addressed.
There are several angles that a future Frozen 3 movie could take. Elsa’s powers and position as the fifth spirit could use further exploration, and a better understanding of how Anna falls into this would also be helpful. Additionally, Anna and Elsa’s parents, Agnarr and Iduna, are still something of a riddle since their decision-making around Elsa’s powers has often rubbed audiences the wrong way. What’s more, Kristoff’s past is still a mystery. Each of these facets of Frozen’s story could come into play, and Anna and Elsa’s childhood could again be a perfect starting point in Frozen 3.
Frozen 3 Needs To Start With A Scene From Anna & Elsa’s Childhood
The first Frozen movie started with a scene from Anna and Elsa’s childhood. The duo took off together to the castle’s ballroom and created their very own winter wonderland before Anna was struck in the head with Elsa’s ice powers. This set off a significant change in the sisters’ lives. They were separated from one another, Anna grew terribly lonely, and Elsa learned to fear her powers. Frozen 2 again started with a scene from the girls’ childhood—this time with one that explored their relationship with their parents, the Enchanted Forest, and Queen Iduna’s knowledge of Ahtohallan.
The childhood scenes starting out Frozen and Frozen 2 have established a trend and storytelling formula that allows audiences to first understand the foundation of Anna and Elsa’s view of the world as adults. Anna’s getting hurt supported Elsa’s fear and lack of acceptance of herself in Frozen, and the familial relationship seen in Frozen 2 set up a better understanding of Elsa’s destiny and the reason for her powers. Now, it only makes sense that Frozen 3 continues with this formula for an overall cohesive storytelling technique.

The Opening Scenes Of Frozen & Frozen 2 Happened On The Same Night
The opening scenes of Frozen and Frozen 2 become even more impactful when it is remembered that they are set on the same night. Anna and Elsa are wearing the same pajamas as they were in the nighttime-ballroom adventure, and Frozen writer Jennifer Lee revealed in the second film’s DVD special features that this had been the intention. Therefore, after King Agnarr told his daughters the story of the Enchanted Forest and Queen Iduna sang Elsa the “All is Found” lullaby, the two sisters snuck off together for their fateful evening in the snow.
This means that Frozen 3’s best move would be to also start on this night. The newest opening scene could show what happened after the king and queen brought their daughters back to the castle and perhaps provide more insight into their plan for Elsa’s Frozen powers (which perhaps never came to fruition). Or, since the first two Frozen movies have revealed the events of that evening in reverse order, the third installment could show events from before the princesses’ bedtime. There could be various valuable stories—but it may be even better to show more of what was happening to a different character that night.
How Frozen 3 Can Use The Night Of Anna & Elsa’s Accident In A New Plot
In the first Frozen movie, audiences were introduced to a small Kristoff and Sven. The duo witnessed the royal family speeding through the night to find the trolls, and it is seen that after he watched the mysterious rock people save Anna, they adopted Kristoff as one of their own. Of course, this left a lot of doors open for further exploration, but Frozen 2 never circled back around to it. Now, if Frozen 3 continues its opening-scene trend, Kristoff’s full story can finally be told—and he can perhaps be given a more prevalent place within the central plot.
Aside from the fact that the Frozen trolls raised Kristoff, the rest of his backstory is entirely blank. He is seen working with a group of ice harvesters on the night that Anna and Elsa had their accident, but it’s unclear why he would be out in the middle of the night doing such a dangerous job. Questions about what happened to his parents, how Kristoff met Sven, and where his gift of understanding reindeer comes from have been on fans’ minds since the first Frozen movie. So, if Frozen 3 takes this route, Kristoff can finally get his story told—and it’s bound to be interesting.
