Spencer Dinwiddie and Kyle Kuzma were once former teammates on the Washington Wizards. Now, they are engaged in a brutal back-and-forth that has made it clear there is some kind of beef between them.
It all started when Dinwiddie made some statements about Kuzma and his status as a star, and Kuzma fired back in a lengthy rant on Twitter. Dinwiddie has since made another statement on the matter, which doubled-down on his take that Kuzma was carried to a title.
“He resorted to some name-calling, Dinsh—ie, last time I [heard that I] was 10 years old. Some people are blessed to be in situations. We don’t get mad at Rick Fox for winning a championship with Kobe and Shaq. Some people are blessed, but we can’t act like Rick Fox led them to a championship.”
It’s not hard to see what Spencer is saying here. While Kuzma played a big role in the Lakers’ 2020 title, he wasn’t more than a role player at best, with Anthony Davis and LeBron James bearing most of the burden on both ends of the floor.
Eventually, the Lakers moved on from Kuzma completely to fill some of the holes on the roster.
“You know that you are there, shooting shots to try to get a contract,” Spencer said on FanDuel TV recently. “You’re probably not even a third star really on a good team, because if you were, the Lakers would have kept you.”
That comment seems like it was the final word for Dinwiddie, and it’s probably best for him to focus on the playoffs. Meanwhile, for Kuz, his future is up in the air as a free agent this summer and he’ll be looking for his next opportunity to shine.
No matter where Kuzma ends up this offseason, you can bet he’s going to do whatever he can to protect his image and legacy from the haters. Whether it’s Spencer Dinwiddie or some randoms on Twitter, Kyle isn’t going to be afraid to call people out.
“I just don’t like false narratives w me! People use the way I dress or my celebrity against me,” said Kuz. “Don’t let my confidence offend your insecurities. I’m a very driven person and strive to get better like I have been my entire career! If you knew my story you’d rock with me more!”
Kuzma had a career year for the Wizards and there’s no question that many teams will be after his services. But until he finds consistency and steps up without the influence of LeBron and AD, people are always going to wonder about his ultimate potential.
