There were lots of jokes on Sunday night’s broadcast of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, which was given to comedian Adam Sandler. But people online were crushed when pal David Spade shared how Sandler was there for him during a death in the family — because they believe he’s talking about his late sister-in-law Kate Spade.

Spade’s speech was hilarious, but there was one moment that got real.

Speaking of his longtime friend, Spade was trying to articulate how Sandler has always been there for him. Even when times were tough.

“In all seriousness, one time a family member passed away and people were scared to call me,” Spade said in the video shared by @allibdongeegbae. “They didn’t want to say anything. They didn’t know what to say. And Adam called — I didn’t answer. He drove over and he came in. He wouldn’t leave until I answered.”

Sandler went over to his friend and proceeded to whisper some of his classic Adam Sandler babytalk in his ear. Ending the whole thing with the perfect flourish — “depression?”

It was just the type of goofy thing one says to try and bring a smile to their heartbroken friend’s face.

“And you know what, it’s what I needed to hear at the time,” Spade joked.

Of course, we don’t know who exactly Spade was referring to in the story. But people in the comments section believed he was referring to the late fashion designer.

“Kate Spade,” wrote one person. “Love that their friendship is so real.” “Yes Kate spade. Rip love him,” another commenter agreed. “My first thought was Kate,” a third commenter wrote. “He was referring to his SIL, Kate Spade,” chimed in another person.

Either way, these two really do have such a special friendship.
