The Dallas Mavericks, by the numbers, suffered the worst upset in the NBA this season against the Charlotte Hornets on Friday night. They’ll look to bounce back against those same Hornets on Sunday afternoon.

The Dallas Mavericks have been on the wrong end of history all season, and that remained the case in Friday’s inexplicable, “dog s***” loss to the Charlotte Hornets.

The Mavs came into that game as 16-point favorites, but the Hornets, fueled by a Dennis Smith Jr. dagger ended up winning 117-109 despite being on the road, on the second night of a back-to-back, and missing several key players. It was the biggest upset in the NBA this season based on pregame betting odds.

With Dallas set to take on Charlotte for the second time in three days, oddsmakers have apparently learned their lesson … well, sort of … as the Mavs are just 11-point favorites this time around. That still seems way too generous for Dallas, but perhaps oddsmakers are banking on the Mavs actually showing some pride on Sunday.

We’ll see…

The Mavs will have the upper hand in the the injury department yet again, as Tim Hardaway Jr. makes his return from a two-game absence due to a non-covid illness. Shockingly, the Mavs are just 1-8 without Hardaway this season.

The American Airlines Center crowd serenaded the lackadaisical Mavs with boos on Friday. Perhaps they should serenade Hardaway with MVP chants next time the Mavs play at home on April 5 against the Sacramento Kings.

No other Mavs are on the injury report, meaning Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving will play consecutive games together after playing tag with injuries over the last two weeks. Both will look to bounce back from horrendous shooting performances from deep on Friday, where they combined to go 3-17.

For Charlotte, LaMelo Ball and Cody Martin are both out, Kelly Oubre Jr. is questionable, and Terry Rozier is doubtful. No matter who plays, though, the Mavs have shown us that any outcome is possible.
