Jordan Poole, Steph Curry help Warriors overcome big night by Joel Embiid
Poole #Poole
The Philadelphia 76ers had Joel Embiid, who might have scored on Wilt Chamberlain or Bill Russell on Friday night.
The Golden State Warriors had no answer for Embiid – but they did have a three-headed backcourt beast in Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole.
Lots of Jordan Poole.
Poole scored 19 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter, as the Warriors rallied from an 11-point deficit and extended their home magic with a 120-112 win over the Sixers at Chase Center.
Curry added 29 and Thompson had 21 as Golden State overcame a huge night by Embiid. He scored 46 points to go along with nine rebounds and eight assists.
The Warriors are now 30-7 at Chase Center this season. They’ve won 13 of their past 14 games there, including nine straight, and they haven’t lost on their home court since Feb. 11.
The Warriors, like most NBA teams, struggled mightily to contain Embiid, one of the favorites in this year’s MVP race. He was especially assertive Friday night, with James Harden sidelined by Achilles tendon soreness.
Kevon Looney started the game on Embiid, with Draymond Green, JaMychal Green and Jonathan Kuminga later taking their turns. Embiid is a handful at 7 feet and 280 pounds, with uncommon mobility and a deft shooting touch.
Looney and Draymond Green, in particular, played strong defense on several plays – and still watched Embiid spin free and sink mid-range jumpers or twisting floaters.
Embiid scored 19 points in the first half, with five rebounds and five assists. For the game, the Sixers outscored the Warriors by 13 points with Embiid on the court – which means the Warriors outscored Philly by 21 in the 10 minutes he rested.
Pure coincidence, right?
Other takeaways from Friday night’s game:
• It’s prime time for scoreboard watching, with only two-plus weeks left in the regular season and the Western Conference playoff race as jumbled as ever.
The Warriors (39-36) received a nice break Friday night, when Dallas lost at home to a bad Charlotte team. More predictably, Utah absorbed a beatdown from Milwaukee.
Also helpful to the Warriors: Sacramento overcame a slow start to beat Phoenix. The Kings are almost certain to land the No. 2 or No. 3 seed, but the Warriors still could pass the Clippers (39-35) and Suns (38-35) for the No. 4 spot, which would come with homecourt advantage in the first round.
• Kuminga has been productive off the bench in recent games, but he made only 1 of 7 shots Friday night. So the Warriors will need contributions from many sources down the stretch, especially with Andrew Wiggins still out and Gary Payton II not yet ready to return.
JaMychal Green answered the call Friday night, collecting 12 points and six rebounds in 14 minutes. He helps the Warriors spread the court with his 3-point shooting – a pressing need since opponents mostly sag off Draymond Green and Looney, given their struggles from the perimeter.
