Ten Hag details meeting with Ratcliffe amid Man Utd bid

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has called on his former side to buy a better right-back in a bid to get the best out of Jadon Sancho.

Former Borussia Dortmund man Sancho arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2021 for the significant fee of £73million, but in truth has severely underwhelmed for the majority of his United career so far. The England international has spent a large portion of this season out of the first-team fold after Erik ten Hag deemed Sancho not ready physically or mentally to play.

However, the ex-City academy graduate is now appearing on a more regular basis and bagged two goals last month in the Premier League. With that being said, Scholes still feels like there is plenty more to come from Sancho providing United can play to his strengths.

The United icon has suggested that the club purchase a more attack-minded right-back to play behind Sancho, rather than the current options of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot.

Asked if Sancho had contributed enough to United’s efforts this season, Scholes explained to BT Sport: “Not yet I don’t think, I still think there’s a lot more to come from him, he obviously had his issues and problems that the manager dealt with, he came back and scored a couple of goals.

“I still think there’s a player in there, he just needs the right players around him.

“Remember at Dortmund before, he had a flying right-back going on all the time, which really helped him because he’s not a quick player, he’s more of a skilful player who wants to play football, he wants to play with his centre-forward and right-back.

“If United can possibly find a better right-back it might make him a different proposition.”

Sancho is currently still having to make do with bit-part cameo appearances. He was introduced off the bench at the hour mark during Thursday’s 1-0 win away at Real Betis as United sealed their place in the last eight of the Europa League.

With both Marcus Rashford and, at least until the end of the season, Wout Weghorst ever-presents on Ten Hag’s team-sheet, it leaves Sancho vying for the final available place in the attacking line-up with the likes of Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Facundo Pellistri.

As United still aim to add more trophies to their haul this term, Sancho could still have a big part to play in shaping the season for the Red Devils.
